Saint John`s at Villanova

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. (Interstat) — Saint John’s visits Villanova on Saturday afternoon in a Big East series that continues at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. First pitch is scheduled under cloudy skies with temperatures near 65 degrees.

The Red Storm (27-22) enter with momentum after routing the Wildcats 8-1 on Friday. Saint John’s has won four of its past five games, including a series sweep of Creighton last weekend. The Wildcats (17-27) have dropped two straight and five of their last seven.

Saint John’s right-hander Liam O’Leary is a key figure after throwing a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts in Friday’s win. O’Leary allowed one earned run over nine innings, throwing 100 pitches. His last three starts have been dominant: a four-hit shutout against Connecticut on April 17, a six-inning, one-run outing against Creighton on May 1 and Friday’s gem. He has struck out 17 over his past two starts.

Villanova will counter with reliever Carsten Finnvold, who appeared briefly Friday, allowing one run on one hit over 1 1/3 innings. Finnvold has been a regular arm out of the bullpen, appearing in six of the Wildcats’ last eight games. He has allowed earned runs in three of those appearances but also turned in scoreless outings against Towson on May 6 and Georgetown on May 2.

Saint John’s offense has shown pop. In Friday’s win, Dylan Fitzsimmons went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Rob Mansour drove in three runs on a 1-for-3 day. The Red Storm have scored at least eight runs in four of their past six games.

Villanova’s bats have struggled recently. The Wildcats managed just one run on Friday and have been held to three or fewer runs in six of their last nine games.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Saint John’s is projected to win 7-5. The same outlet’s ELO system gives the Red Storm a 71.2 percent probability of victory.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon in Plymouth Meeting. Saint John’s then returns home to host Butler for a three-game set starting May 14. Villanova heads to Connecticut for a three-game series beginning the same day.
