George Washington at Richmond

RICHMOND (Interstat) — Evan Wilson hit a walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning to lift Richmond to a 10-6 victory over George Washington on Saturday afternoon at Malcolm U. Pitt Field, giving the Spiders a series win in the Atlantic 10 matchup.

Richmond (29-21, 14-5 Atlantic 10) erased a four-run deficit in the ninth inning and finally prevailed in an extra-inning thriller that lasted nearly four hours. George Washington (18-31, 6-12) had taken a 6-2 lead in the top of the ninth only to see the Spiders rally.

The game began with Richmond jumping ahead early. Michael Elko led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to deep center field, and Aidan followed with an RBI single, giving the Spiders a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, RJ Johnson Jr. delivered a two-run single to extend the advantage to 4-0.

George Washington got on the board in the third when Robbie Lavey homered to deep center. The Revolutionaries chipped away further in the seventh. After Wenz doubled, Jones doubled him home, and Lavey’s groundout brought in Jones, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Nick Mullen tied the game in the eighth with a solo homer to left field, setting up a dramatic ninth inning. George Washington loaded the bases with a walk, a bunt and an intentional walk, then Tufano walked to force in a run, and Kent’s sacrifice bunt brought home another, giving the Revolutionaries a 6-4 lead.

Richmond responded in the bottom of the ninth. Elko walked, and after a strikeout, Johnson crushed a two-run homer to right field, tying the game at 6-6. The Spiders had a chance to win in regulation when Wilson doubled and Aidan reached third, but the inning ended on a flyout.

In the 11th, George Washington went quietly, with three straight outs. Richmond opened the bottom of the frame with a walk to Winebrenner. Johnson also had a big day, going 2 for 6 with a home run and four RBIs. Elko added a solo homer. Richmond starter Joey Giordano pitched six innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four.
