George Washington at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The Richmond Spiders look to build on their series-opening victory Saturday afternoon when they host the George Washington Revolutionaries in an Atlantic 10 matchup at Malcolm U. Pitt Field.
First pitch is set for the afternoon under cloudy skies with the temperature at 68 degrees.
Richmond (28-21) enters the game riding momentum from an 8-5 win Friday in the opener of this three-game set. The Spiders have won four of their last six overall. George Washington (18-30) has dropped three straight and seven of its last eight.
The Spiders’ lineup features first baseman Dylan Winebrenner, who powered the offense in Friday’s win by going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Winebrenner has been on a torrid stretch over the past two weeks. In his last seven games, the first baseman has driven in multiple runs five times, including four-RBI efforts in three of those contests. He has homered twice in his last five games.
George Washington will counter with right-hander Max Haug, who started Friday’s game and took the loss despite an unusual line: Haug pitched six innings, allowed four earned runs and struck out seven, but did not surrender a hit. Walks and defensive miscues proved costly. In his previous outing May 2 against George Mason, Haug went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts despite again not allowing a hit.
The Revolutionaries (18-30) have struggled to generate consistent offense. Third baseman Cristino Tufano went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in Friday’s loss, but George Washington managed only five runs.
Looking ahead, the teams conclude the series Sunday in Richmond. George Washington then returns home for a three-game set against Dayton beginning Thursday. Richmond travels to Virginia on Tuesday before a three-game series at Saint Louis starting Wednesday.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-3 Richmond victory, and the ELO system gives the Spiders a 68.5 percent probability to win.
