Hawaii at UC Davis
DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — Isaiah Magdaleno pitched eight scoreless innings on one hit and struck out nine as the Hawaii Warriors defeated the UC Davis Aggies 4-1 on Friday at Dobbins Baseball Complex in a Big West Conference game.
Hawaii improved to 16-16 overall, while UC Davis fell to 24-25.
The Warriors seized control in the top of the first inning. After Nahaku K. was hit by a pitch, Brextyn Zeigler singled and Mana Lau Kong drove in a run with a single through the left side. Draven Nushida followed with an RBI single to center field, and the Warriors led 3-0 after one.
Magdaleno retired the first seven batters he faced, striking out four in the early innings. UC Davis’s only hit off him came in the eighth inning, but the Aggies still managed to push across a run. In the bottom of the eighth, Lee was hit by a pitch, took second on a single by Wooldridge, and scored on an RBI single by Howard. That cut the deficit to 4-1, but Magdaleno struck out Wright and Story to escape further damage.
Magdaleno’s final line featured eight innings pitched, zero hits, one earned run and nine strikeouts. He walked one batter and hit another. Tsubasa Tomii worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out one and earning a save.
Hawaii added its fourth run in the top of the fourth inning when catcher Jake Redding homered to left field on a full-count pitch from UC Davis reliever Taylor Werth. It was Redding’s only hit of the game, also accounting for his sole RBI.
Lau Kong finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Nushida went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Zeigler scored twice.
UC Davis used five pitchers. Starter Grayson Bonanno allowed three runs on two hits and one walk in one inning. Werth followed with two innings of two-hit, no-run ball. Mason Lerma surrendered one run on four hits over two innings, striking out three. Tyler Wood gave up one run on one hit in two innings, and Kai Mault provided one inning of relief with three hits and two runs.
The Aggies managed only four hits in the game. Mault doubled in the first inning, McNeal doubled in the seventh, Wooldridge singled in the eighth, and Howard singled in the eighth.
Hawaii had 10 hits total, including two by Lau Kong, three by Nushida, one by Zeigler, one by Takata, one by Shimao, one by Redding, and one by Wright.
The first-inning outburst proved decisive. After the Warriors loaded the bases with one out on the hit-by-pitch, Zeigler’s single and Lau Kong’s RBI single, Nushida added the third run. The rally ended when Redding grounded into a fielder’s choice. Hawaii attempted to add more in the fifth and seventh innings but left runners in scoring position.
The win was Hawaii’s second in its last three games after dropping three in a row at Oregon State last week. UC Davis had won four of its previous five, including a sweep of Cal State Fullerton last weekend.
The two teams conclude the three-game series Saturday and Sunday, also at Dobbins Baseball Complex.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of UC Davis 6, Hawaii 3, while Interstat’s ELO system gave Hawaii a 65.10 percent probability to win the game.
