Stony Brook at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass. (Interstat) — Matt Brinker drove in four runs, Harrison Feinberg homered and drove in two, and Northeastern routed Stony Brook 12-3 on Friday afternoon at Parsons Field, bouncing back from a recent series loss to Monmouth.

The Huskies improved to 29-18 overall and 14-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seawolves fell to 20-26, 10-12.

Northeastern seized control in the bottom of the third inning. After Stony Brook had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a groundout by Matt Zampieron and a run-scoring groundout by Chase Dromboski, the Huskies answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Tyler Harmony doubled and scored on a single by Feinberg, but Feinberg was caught stealing to limit the damage.

The game turned in the third. With Stony Brook still leading 3-2 after a walk forced in a run in the second, Andrew Rogovic settled down on the mound. In the bottom of the third, Matt Brinker singled, and AJ Aschettino followed with a two-run homer to left field, putting Northeastern ahead 4-3. The Huskies added another run later in the inning on a wild pitch that scored Jack Musacchia to make it 5-3.

Northeastern never looked back. In the fourth, Feinberg led off with a solo home run to right field. Ty then homered to right, pushing the lead to 7-3. Stony Brook answered with two runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Ty, who drove in Zampieron and Dromboski to cut the deficit to 7-5.

But the Huskies broke the game open in the sixth. After Harmony reached on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error, Feinberg was intentionally walked. Brinker then singled through the left side, scoring Harmony and Ty to push the lead to 9-5. Brinker stole third and later scored on a throwing error by reliever Ryan Colagrande, making it 10-5.

Stony Brook added a run in the sixth on a groundout by Matt Cervoni, but it was not enough.

The most critical sequence came in the bottom of the third, when Aschettino’s homer erased Stony Brook’s slim lead and ignited a five-run outburst that gave Northeastern control. From that point, the Huskies outscored the Seawolves 8-0.

Rogovic, the first of three Northeastern pitchers, earned the win with three innings of three-hit, shutout relief, striking out one. Robbie O’Connor started and allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out three. Andrew Basel pitched a scoreless ninth.

For Stony Brook, Evan Kay and Ty Panariello each allowed two runs in two-inning relief appearances. The Seawolves grounded into two double plays, including a critical one in the seventh that ended a potential rally.

Brinker finished 3 for 5 with four RBIs, adding an RBI double in the eighth to cap his day. Feinberg went 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs, and Harmony added two hits and an RBI. Ryan Gerety and Tyler Harmony also contributed, with Aschettino driving in two on his homer.

The Seawolves got 11 hits but could not overcome the Huskies’ 14-hit attack. Stony Brook had swept Saint John’s in its previous game Tuesday but had lost three of its last four entering Friday.

Northeastern had dropped its last game at Monmouth on Sunday but had won three of its last four before Friday.

The teams continue the three-game series Saturday and Sunday at Parsons Field. Stony Brook then hosts Hofstra for a three-game set next week, while Northeastern travels to Connecticut before heading to Towson.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Northeastern 7, Stony Brook 6, and the ELO system gave Northeastern a 76.90 percent probability to win.
