Butler at Toledo
TOLEDO, Ohio (Interstat) — Preston Zumwalt drove in three runs with a double in the second inning and Cade Baker homered in the third as Toledo pounded Butler 12-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Scott Park Baseball Complex.
The Rockets improved to 25-24, while the Bulldogs fell to 17-28. Toledo outhit Butler 11-3 and scored in four consecutive innings after the first.
Butler took a brief lead in the top of the first when Logan Crock flied out to left field, but the run never materialized. The Bulldogs’ only run came in the fourth inning when Matt Rhoades singled and scored on a Connor Sackett single.
The decisive moment came in the bottom of the second. After Butler starter Corbin Snyder walked Ty O’Brien and hit JP Wagner, Alex McCranie walked to load the bases. Alex Thomas relieved Snyder, and Zumwalt greeted him with a double to left-center that cleared the bases, giving Toledo a 3-0 lead.
The Rockets never looked back. In the third, Baker crushed a solo home run to left-center, and a sacrifice fly by Alex McCranie made it 5-0. Baker finished with three hits, including the homer, and drove in two runs.
Toledo broke the game open in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Baker singled in a run, and after a groundout made it 7-0, Zumwalt singled to center field to drive in two more, pushing the lead to 9-1. Zumwalt finished with two hits and five RBIs.
The Rockets added three runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Ty O’Brien and a sacrifice fly by JP Wagner.
Butler managed only three hits off a parade of Toledo pitchers. Ryan Hughes started and allowed one hit over two innings, striking out one. Matt Hubbard, Cole Giesige, Braden Curry and John Hojnowski combined to hold the Bulldogs to two hits over the final five innings.
For Butler, Zak White pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief, but the damage had long been done. The Bulldogs’ offense struggled to mount any threat after the fourth inning, striking out seven times and leaving six runners on base.
Toledo’s victory avenged a 11-1 loss at Butler on March 24, the teams’ only previous meeting this season. The Rockets have won five of their last seven games, while Butler has dropped two straight.
The game was called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Toledo 7, Butler 5, and its ELO system had given Toledo a 66.70 percent probability to win.
