Jacksonville at North Florida
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — North Florida starter Trevor Nikolis threw 4 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout ball and the Ospreys scored in every inning from the second through the seventh Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 10-0 victory over Jacksonville at John Sessions Stadium.
The Ospreys evened their season record at 26-20, matching the Dolphins at 26-20, and split the weekend ASUN series after Jacksonville won Saturday 4-3 and lost Friday 5-4. North Florida took control early and never let the Dolphins’ offense find any rhythm.
Nikolis allowed only a fifth-inning single to Sam Grunberg, struck out three and did not walk a batter before giving way to John Costa, who tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings with one strikeout. Costa retired seven of the eight batters he faced, with the only blemish being a walk.
Jacksonville mustered just one hit all afternoon, a fifth-inning single by Grunberg that was erased on a fielder’s choice. The Dolphins did not advance a runner past second base until the fifth, when a walk to Bla Edmonds and a walk to Cade Walter loaded the bases with two outs, but Costa came on and got Mummau Sam to foul out to first.
The game’s decisive moment came in the bottom of the second when North Florida designated hitter Jackson Toberman crushed a two-run home run to right field, scoring G. Gomez, who had walked. That gave the Ospreys a 2-0 lead.
North Florida broke the game open in the fourth, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring five runs. After a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Carter White singled up the middle to score two runs. S. Benjamin followed with a double down the left-field line that scored Toberman. J. Schrafft then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that plated White, and D. Buchanan doubled to left-center to bring home Benjamin. By the time the inning ended, North Florida led 7-0.
The Ospreys added a run in the fifth on a bases-loaded groundout by White that scored B. Hosey, and another in the sixth after an error allowed M. Farner to reach second. He scored unearned on a double by M. Collins. North Florida capped the scoring in the seventh when Schrafft doubled to left-center, bringing home pinch-runner S. Alford.
Jacksonville used six pitchers in the game. Grant Brooks threw 0 2/3 innings of hitless relief, and Kyle Hopper contributed one scoreless inning. Payton Waters allowed one run on one hit with one strikeout in one inning, and Ayden Phillips gave up one run on one hit with one strikeout in 0 1/3 innings. The Dolphins’ bullpen otherwise kept the Ospreys from adding more damage, but the offense never got on track.
For North Florida, Toberman finished 1 for 1 with the two-run homer and two walks, scoring twice. White drove in three runs, and Schrafft had two RBIs. Buchanan also drove in a run. The Ospreys collected six hits, including two doubles.
Jacksonville now heads on the road to face Florida State on Tuesday, while North Florida travels to face Florida on the same day. Both teams resume conference play next weekend, with Jacksonville visiting Stetson and North Florida visiting Queens (N.C.).
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Jacksonville 8, North Florida 5, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Dolphins a 53.20 percent probability to win.
