UNC Asheville shuts out Winthrop 9‑0 behind Smith’s gem
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — Cooper Smith tossed a complete-game shutout Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Baseball Field, leading UNC Asheville to a 9-0 Big South victory over Winthrop. Smith allowed five hits, struck out nine and walked none in a bounce-back performance after a rough outing earlier in the week.
The Bulldogs (18-30) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, then broke the game open with three in the fifth and three more in the seventh. Zeb Swangim delivered a three-run double in the seventh and finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Tyler Parks went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Winthrop (30-18) managed only five hits, including two from Josh Skowronski. Eagles relievers Raymond McNaught, Garrett Byrd, Randy Guzman and Colby McNeely combined for 8 2/3 innings of work, but a fielding error led to three unearned runs.
The Eagles had taken the first two games of the series, winning 10-6 on Saturday and 5-1 on Friday. The loss ended Winthrop’s two-game winning streak.
