Winthrop at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Winthrop Eagles (29-17) take on the UNC Asheville Bulldogs (17-29) on Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Baseball Field in the finale of a Big South series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., with the forecast calling for 55 degrees and cloudy skies.

Winthrop enters after a 5-1 victory Friday, its fifth win in six games. Right-hander Brayden Gilley, who has been the Eagles’ most reliable arm, threw six shutout innings in that win, allowing only one hit and one earned run while striking out two. Over his last four starts, Gilley has posted a 1.80 ERA, with 19 strikeouts in 25 innings, including a complete-game effort against South Carolina Upstate on April 17. He is expected to start Sunday.

UNC Asheville will counter with TJ Brooks, a right-hander who worked two scoreless innings of relief Friday, giving up two hits and striking out one. Brooks has pitched sparingly this season, with his only other appearance coming April 11 against Longwood, when he allowed two earned runs in one inning. The Bulldogs have lost five of their last six, and their offense has managed just two runs in two games against Winthrop this weekend.

In Friday’s opener, Winthrop’s Cornelius Wouters went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while reliever Harrison Wilson struck out three in three scoreless innings. The Eagles also got a strong start from Gilley. Saturday’s game was a scoreless affair, with no runs crossing the plate — the result of a pitching duel that ended as a 0-0 tie, though Winthrop’s bullpen again held the Bulldogs in check.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-1 Winthrop victory, and the Eagles’ offense has been consistent, averaging 6.2 runs over their last 10 games. UNC Asheville, meanwhile, has averaged just 3.1 runs over the same span and has scored three or fewer in 14 of its last 18 contests.

Following Sunday’s game, Winthrop travels to North Carolina on Wednesday before a three-game series at High Point next weekend. UNC Asheville heads to Western Carolina on Tuesday, then visits Radford for a three-game set starting Friday.

Winthrop is aiming for its second straight series win over the Bulldogs after taking two of three last season. A sweep Sunday would push the Eagles to four games above .500 in Big South play.
