Rider at Niagara
STELA NIAGARA, N.Y. (Interstat) — A pitcher’s duel that featured six hitless innings from Rider’s Clayton Poliey ended with a 10-inning walk-off single by Jason Green, giving the Niagara Purple Eagles a 1-0 victory over the Rider Broncs on Sunday at Bobo Field.
Poliey, a right-hander for the Broncs, did not allow a hit over six innings, striking out six and walking two, but was lifted after 97 pitches. Gage Wheaton matched him with seven scoreless innings for Niagara, scattering seven hits while striking out five and walking none. Andrew Damiani then closed the door for the Purple Eagles with three perfect innings of relief, striking out one.
The game remained scoreless through nine innings despite both teams generating scoring opportunities. Rider stranded runners in scoring position in the third, fifth and sixth innings, while Niagara left eight men on base, including a pair in the bottom of the ninth.
The decisive moment came in the bottom of the 10th. Curtis McKay led off with a single to right field off Rider reliever Christian Aiello. McKay stole second, then scored when Green lined a single up the middle for the game’s only run. Aiello took the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits over 3 2/3 innings.
Niagara’s Rees Kozar finished 3-for-5, while Jacob Brooks and Green each had two hits. Matt Leahy went 2-for-3 for Rider, including a double, but the Broncs could not push a run across. Rider had seven hits in the game, while Niagara collected 11.
The loss dropped Rider to 24-16 overall, while Niagara improved to 22-16-1. The win helped the Purple Eagles rebound from a 26-2 defeat Saturday and evened the weekend series after Niagara won 12-3 on Friday.
Poliey’s outing was his second consecutive strong start after he fired 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a 18-5 win over Saint Peter’s on April 26. Wheaton’s seven-inning performance marked his fourth start this season without allowing an earned run.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Niagara 7, Rider 6, and Interstatl’s ELO system gave Rider a 58.30 percent probability to win.
