UC Davis at California

BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — Braydon Wooldridge pitched five innings of one-hit ball, retiring the final 14 batters he faced after a first-inning solo home run, and UC Davis defeated California 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Evans Diamond.

Wooldridge, who also batted as the designated hitter later in the game, allowed only the leadoff homer to California catcher Hideki Prather in the bottom of the first inning. Prather’s blast to deep left field gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead and accounted for the only run Wooldridge surrendered. He struck out three and walked none, leaving the game after the fifth inning with UC Davis ahead 4-1. The Aggies bullpen closed out the contest with four scoreless innings from Tyler Wood, Peter Storjohann and Rowen Barnes. Storjohann struck out three in two innings, and Barnes fanned one in the ninth.

UC Davis tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when left fielder Jaxon Murphy homered to deep right field, his solo shot making it 1-1. The Aggies seized control in the fifth inning, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring three runs off California reliever Trent Roach. After walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, right fielder Tyler Howard tripled to left-center field, driving in two runs. First baseman Nick Mault followed with a single to right field, scoring Howard and giving UC Davis a 4-1 lead.

The Aggies added two more runs in the seventh inning. Mault delivered his second RBI single of the day, plating Wright, and a wild pitch by California reliever Spalliero allowed Story to score from third base, extending the lead to 6-1. Howard finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Mault went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

California starter Tanner Grove pitched four innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out seven. He departed after the fourth inning with the game tied 1-1. The Golden Bears managed only five hits in the game, with Prather accounting for two of them, including his home run. California threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and third with two outs, but Storjohann struck out Prather looking to end the inning. The Bears had another scoring chance in the ninth, reaching base on an error, but Barnes induced a lineout to shortstop to end the game.

The win improved UC Davis to 20-24 overall, snapping a two-game losing streak. The Aggies had lost four of their previous five contests, including a 7-1 defeat to Sacramento State on April 22. Wooldridge, who entered the game with a .333 batting average over his previous four games as a hitter, provided a strong two-way performance. He went 0-for-3 at the plate but was effective on the mound, recording his first pitching win of the season.

California fell to 23-21 overall, ending a three-game winning streak that included a 6-5 victory at Saint Mary’s on Tuesday. The Golden Bears had lost four of their previous seven games before Wednesday’s matchup.

Next up, UC Davis travels to Cal State Fullerton for a three-game series starting Friday, May 1. California begins a three-game home series against Virginia Tech on the same day.
