BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — California hosts UC Davis in a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday at Evans Diamond, with first pitch scheduled for the afternoon and evening. The Golden Bears (23-20) enter with a slight edge in the standings over the Aggies (19-24). Forecasts call for clear skies and a game-time temperature of 52 degrees.
California won the most recent meeting between the teams Feb. 25, 7-2, in Davis. The Aggies dropped a 6-5, 12-inning decision at Stanford on Monday, despite 3.0 scoreless innings from right-hander Grayson Bonanno. UC Davis salvaged a 3-0 win over Long Beach State on Sunday following consecutive losses to the Dirtbags.
Bonanno (0-0) is a key arm for the Aggies. Over his past five outings, he has allowed two earned runs over 10.1 innings with four strikeouts. He recorded three scoreless innings in two of those appearances.
California counters with left fielder Carl Schmidt, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in Tuesday’s 6-5 win at Saint Mary’s. Schmidt is hitting .333 over his last four games with two home runs and four RBIs. He also homered in a 13-2 win at Pittsburgh on April 12.
The Golden Bears dropped two of three at Miami (Fla.) last weekend, scoring nine runs in a victory before managing one total run in consecutive losses.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-4 California win, and the ELO system gives the Golden Bears a 73.7 percent probability of victory.
UC Davis begins a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton on Friday. California opens a three-game home set against Virginia Tech on Friday.
