Cornell at Brown
PROVIDENCE (Interstat) — A pitching duel that extended into the 13th inning ended with Cornell defeating Brown 2-1 on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader at Murray Stadium.
Cornell, now 9-24, scored twice in the top of the first inning off Brown starter Drew Nelson. Singles by Barela, Hager and Carlson loaded the bases with no outs, and a lineout double play kept the damage minimal. The Big Red stranded two runners in the third and fifth innings against Nelson, who worked seven innings, allowed seven hits and struck out three without surrendering an earned run.
Brown, which fell to 19-15, answered in the bottom of the sixth. With reliever Ross Yoshida on in relief of starter John Hegarty, Mika Petersen doubled and DJ Dillehay singled. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, and Logan Meusy grounded out to shortstop, scoring Petersen to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Yoshida, who entered with one out in the sixth, stranded the tying run at third by striking out Mark Henshon. He finished with seven innings of one-hit ball, allowing one earned run and striking out four. Hegarty had opened with five hitless innings, striking out one, before being lifted.
The game remained 2-1 through regulation as both bullpens held. Nelson departed after seven, and Christian Keel entered for the Bears. Keel walked Wildman to open the eighth, then surrendered a double to John L. that scored Wildman for a 3-1 Cornell lead. Keel struck out two to limit further damage.
Brown threatened in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Luigs doubled and Mika Petersen was intentionally walked. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position with one out, but Dillehay popped out and Meusy flied out to end the inning.
Yoshida worked a perfect ninth and 10th, and the game moved to the 13th still tied 3-1. Drew Nelson’s line had been erased by Keel’s run, but Brown’s offense could not break through.
The decisive inning came in the top of the 13th. With Matt Wilmarth on in relief for Brown, Cornell’s Wildman singled to center with one out. John L. reached on a fielding error by third baseman Dillehay, putting runners on first and second. Lopez struck out swinging, but Wildman stole third. Swidorski then singled up the middle, scoring Wildman for a 4-1 Cornell lead. John L. was thrown out trying to advance to third, ending the inning.
Ethan Hamill entered for Cornell in the bottom of the 13th. He retired Petersen on a lineout, walked Alex Benevento, then induced a double play from Dillehay to end the game. Hamill earned the save with one inning, no hits and one walk.
Cornell finished with 10 hits, including two each from Barela, Hager, John L. and Swidorski. Luke Johnson, playing third and second, went 2-for-6 with an RBI. Brown managed eight hits, with Luigs and Dillehay each collecting two. Mika Petersen had one hit, a double.
