Cornell at Brown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Cornell’s Trent Lopez brings a power bat into the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader Saturday, but the struggling Big Red face a daunting test against Brown ace Dylan Reid at Murray Stadium.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 49 degrees. Brown enters with an 18-14 overall record, while Cornell is 8-23.
The Bears (18-14) are coming off a 6-3 win at Harvard on Tuesday, a game in which Reid was dominant. The right-hander threw seven shutout innings, allowing no hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Over his last two starts, Reid has allowed just one earned run across 13 innings, with 10 strikeouts and no hits allowed in either outing. He also threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout against Princeton on March 29.
Lopez, a designated hitter and occasional infielder, has been Cornell’s most consistent power threat. In Tuesday’s 10-6 win at Binghamton, he went 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Over his last nine games, he has four home runs and six RBIs, though he has also gone hitless in four of those contests. Lopez is batting .222 on the season but has shown the ability to change a game with one swing.
Cornell’s offense was buoyed Tuesday by Tyler Beaulieu (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs) and shortstop TJ Swidorski (2-for-3, HR, RBI). The Big Red have lost 10 of their last 12 games, including a three-game sweep at Penn and a home series loss to Yale.
Brown has won four of its last five. The Bears swept a doubleheader at Dartmouth and pounded Holy Cross 9-1. They are 10-4 at home this season.
Saturday’s doubleheader is the first meeting of the season between the ancient rivals. The teams meet again Sunday.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Brown victory, with the Bears holding a 57.1 percent probability to win based on ELO ratings.
Cornell counter with a bullpen game after using multiple arms Tuesday. Brown’s Christian Keel threw two scoreless innings of relief in Tuesday’s win, and the Bears’ bullpen has a 3.45 ERA over the last 10 games.
