Cornell at Binghamton

ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Cornell Big Red erupted for 10 runs on 10 hits, defying heavy statistical odds to defeat the Binghamton Bearcats 10-6 in nonconference baseball Tuesday at Varsity Field.

The victory marked a significant reversal for Cornell, which entered the game with an 8-23 record and had lost to Binghamton 11-4 just a week earlier. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 7-3 Binghamton win, with the Bearcats given a 72% probability of victory based on its ELO system.

The most important part of the game was Cornell’s immediate and sustained offensive explosion, which built an insurmountable early lead. The Big Red set the tone in the first inning when leadoff hitter Mason Barela homered to left-center field. Cornell added another run in the frame on a fielder’s choice by Jayden Shin, taking a 2-0 lead before Binghamton recorded a hit.

Cornell broke the game open in the third inning, sending nine men to the plate and scoring five runs. The big blow was a three-run homer to left field by Tyler Beaulieu, which scored TJ Swidorski and Shin. Ryan Dillon followed with an RBI single to cap the rally, pushing the lead to 7-0.

Binghamton responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Tommy Popoff drove in a run with a single, Andrew Heppner added a sacrifice fly and Caden Albright contributed an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 7-3.

The Big Red immediately answered in the top of the fourth, however, effectively sealing the game. After Caden Wildman singled and Jake Hower was hit by a pitch, Trent Lopez launched a three-run homer to left field off reliever Conlan Taylor, restoring a seven-run cushion at 10-3.

The Bearcats mounted their final threat in the fourth, scoring three runs on Matt Bolton’s two-run single and an RBI single by Steven Kraus to make it 10-6. From that point, Cornell’s bullpen silenced the Binghamton bats. Five Big Red relievers — Noah Keller, Tavian Ramos, Michael Tight, Ross Yoshida and the starter-turned-reliever Braeden Johnson — combined for five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.

Binghamton’s bullpen also found success late, as Brady Lesiak, Jake Dally and Brady Bouchard each threw a perfect inning with two strikeouts. Swidorski added a solo home run for Cornell in the ninth for the final margin.

Lopez finished with three RBIs on his home run for Cornell. Beaulieu also drove in three on his homer. Bolton led Binghamton with two hits and two RBIs.

Cornell improved to 9-23 overall, while Binghamton fell to 21-15. The teams are scheduled to meet again on May 5 in Binghamton.

Cornell next travels to Brown for a three-game series starting Saturday. Binghamton opens a three-game home series against Longwood on Friday.
