Cornell at Binghamton

ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Binghamton Bearcats, riding a six-game winning streak, will look to continue their hot play when they host the struggling Cornell Big Red in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Varsity Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 42 degrees.

Binghamton (21-13) enters with momentum, having swept a three-game series from Bryant over the weekend. The Bearcats also defeated Cornell (7-23) decisively, 11-4, just last Tuesday in Ithaca. Sean Sweeney has been a key offensive catalyst for Binghamton. Over his last 10 games, the infielder is batting .366 (15-for-41) with 11 RBIs, including a grand slam in Saturday’s 13-9 win over Bryant.

Conversely, Cornell has lost eight of its last nine games, including a 16-5 home loss to Yale on Saturday. The Big Red will hope for a strong outing from right-hander Huxley Holcombe, who is slated to start. Holcombe has been inconsistent but capable of dominance, as shown in a six-inning, one-hit, one-run performance against Harvard on March 29. He took the loss against Yale last time out, allowing five earned runs over five innings.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Binghamton victory, with its ELO rating system giving the Bearcats a 72% probability to win.

The teams will meet again in Binghamton on May 5. Following Tuesday’s game, Cornell travels to Brown for a three-game series starting Saturday. Binghamton remains home to host Longwood for a three-game set beginning Friday.
