San Francisco at Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Portland Pilots will look to secure a series victory when they host the San Francisco Dons in an evening West Coast Conference baseball game Sunday at Joe Etzel Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 68 degrees.
The Pilots (21-14) took the series opener 5-3 on Friday behind a strong relief outing from Kaden Segel and three RBIs from Cole Katayama-Stall. Saturday’s game was a postponement. Portland’s bullpen, anchored by Segel’s 4 2/3 scoreless innings Friday, will be key again as the team aims to improve its standing in the conference.
San Francisco (17-17) seeks to even the series and get back to .500. The Dons have lost three of their last four, including a 12-2 rout at Sacramento State on April 14.
A player to watch for the Dons is reliever Chris Byhre, who has been effective in recent outings despite the team’s struggles. Byhre tossed 2 1/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts in Friday’s loss to Portland. Over his last five appearances, he has allowed no hits and just one earned run in 7 1/3 innings, striking out eight.
For the Pilots, Segel is coming off his best performance of the season. The right-hander silenced the Dons’ bats over his 4 2/3-inning stint Friday, scattering five hits and striking out three. His consistency will be vital for a Portland pitching staff navigating a long weekend.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the contest projects to be a tight one, with a predicted final score of San Francisco 5, Portland 4.
Following Sunday’s game, Portland travels to face Washington on Tuesday. San Francisco continues its road trip with a game at California on Tuesday.
