Elon at Campbell
LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging Campbell squad looks to continue its Colonial Athletic Association momentum when it hosts struggling Elon in an afternoon game Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Fightin’ Camels (24-12) enter the weekend series opener having won eight of their last 10 games, including an 11-8 road victory over UNC Greensboro on Tuesday. A key two-way contributor for Campbell is Carlos Lugo, who went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs in that win. For the season, Lugo is batting .310 with team highs in home runs (8) and RBIs (34).
They will face an Elon Phoenix team (14-22) that has lost five of its last six. Elon is coming off a 13-3 home loss to Winthrop on Tuesday, a game in which reliever Hank Krift threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs. Krift, a player to watch for the Phoenix, has struggled recently, allowing earned runs in each of his last three appearances out of the bullpen.
Campbell’s potent offense, averaging over seven runs per game, will test an Elon pitching staff that has a collective 6.12 ERA. The Fightin’ Camels took the first game of the series Friday, defeating Elon 8-0.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Campbell victory Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. under clear skies with a forecast temperature of 87 degrees.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon before Campbell travels to Charlotte on Tuesday. Elon will visit Winthrop on Tuesday before returning home for a series against UNC Wilmington next weekend.
