Arizona State at BYU

PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — A split Big 12 series sets the stage for a decisive rubber match Saturday evening as the Arizona State Sun Devils face the BYU Cougars at Larry H. Miller Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT under cloudy skies with temperatures near 41 degrees.

The series is tied after two contrasting blowouts. BYU (20-17, 6-11 Big 12) dominated Thursday, 19-9, before Arizona State (27-13, 10-7) responded with a 13-0, seven-inning shutout victory Friday night.

Saturday’s outcome will hinge on which offense can break through. The Sun Devils, boasting a superior overall record, are projected by Interstat’s ELO system as 62.9% favorites. However, the same service’s game simulator predicts a 7-5 victory for the home-standing Cougars.

A key player for Arizona State is outfielder Matthew Polk. He homered and drove in three runs in Thursday’s loss but was held hitless in Friday’s win. Over his last 10 games, Polk is batting .333 (10-for-30) with two homers and eight RBIs.

BYU will look to first baseman Bryker Hurdsman, who was instrumental in Thursday’s win, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs. He was 0-for-3 in Friday’s shutout. Hurdsman is 14-for-41 (.341) with 11 RBIs in his last 10 contests.

Following Saturday’s game, BYU hosts Utah Tech on Monday before a non-conference road series at Arizona. Arizona State returns home to face New Mexico State on Wednesday before hosting Baylor in Big 12 play next weekend.
