Ohio State at Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a wild offensive display featuring 28 combined hits, the Purdue Boilermakers outslugged the Ohio State Buckeyes 12-7 on Saturday afternoon at Alexander Field to clinch the Big Ten series.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under evening lights, saw Purdue erase an early six-run deficit with a relentless attack, scoring in five different innings to improve to 26-11 overall. Ohio State fell to 19-18.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded immediately, setting the tone for the entire contest. Ohio State stunned the home crowd by plating seven runs in the top of the first inning before Purdue had recorded an out, capitalizing on early command issues from Purdue starter Chris Domke. The Buckeyes sent 11 batters to the plate, with Alex Bemis and Henry Kaczmar delivering key hits.
Purdue’s response in the bottom half of the inning was even more emphatic and ultimately decisive. The Boilermakers answered by sending 12 men to the plate, scoring six runs on five hits, three walks, a stolen base and a critical Ohio State pitching change. The rally chased Buckeyes starter Chris Domke and was highlighted by a two-run single from Quincy Malbrough and RBI hits from Jackson Bessette and Zachary Zychowski. The inning turned on a double steal, with Malbrough stealing home and Bessette taking second, which pulled Purdue within a run and completely shifted the momentum.
Purdue completed the reversal by taking the lead for good in the second inning. After Aaron Manias singled and was caught stealing, the Boilermakers rallied with two outs. Avery Moore doubled, scored on a groundout by Richmond, and then came home on another RBI single from Malbrough to give Purdue an 8-7 advantage it would not relinquish.
Ohio State briefly tied the game at 8-8 in the third on a two-run homer by Dane Harvey, but Purdue reliever Gavin Beuter entered and stranded two runners to preserve the tie. The Boilermakers then broke the deadlock in the bottom of the seventh. Zychowski tripled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Anderson, and Manias followed with a solo home run to extend the lead to 10-7.
Purdue added insurance in the eighth when Bessette launched a two-run homer following a double by Moore, pushing the lead to 12-7.
Ohio State threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with one out and scoring one run on a Mason Eckelman single. But Purdue reliever Jake Kramer entered and recorded two outs to secure the victory.
Both teams finished with 14 hits. Eckelman led Ohio State with three hits and two RBIs. For Purdue, Malbrough drove in three runs, while Bessette and Manias each had two RBIs. Zychowski, Moore and Manias each had three hits in the Boilermakers’ balanced attack.
The win defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had forecast a 7-6 Purdue victory and gave the Boilermakers a 62.8% probability to win.
The series concludes Sunday at Alexander Field.
