High Point at Charleston Southern
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — Frank Kelly drove in five runs and Ty Brachbill carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning as the High Point Panthers routed the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 14-3 in a Big South Conference baseball game Saturday evening at Buccaneer Ballpark.
The Panthers (26-12, 9-5) pounded out 19 hits and scored in five different innings to secure the series victory after a narrow 14-11 win in the opener Friday. The Buccaneers fell to 21-16 overall and 8-6 in conference play.
The most important sequence of the game came early, as High Point immediately seized control and Brachbill stifled any hope of a Charleston Southern response. The Panthers scored twice in the top of the first inning, with Kelly doubling and later scoring on an RBI double from SeoJun Oh. They added three more in the second, highlighted by Kelly’s run-scoring single, to build a 5-0 lead.
That was more than enough for Brachbill. The right-hander dominated the Buccaneers’ lineup, not allowing a hit until J.P. Wolfley’s one-out double in the sixth inning. By that time, High Point led 8-3. Brachbill (7-0) earned the win, pitching seven full innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out six and walking one. The only damage against him came in the second inning when Gavin Speirs tripled to drive in two runs, and a third run scored on a throwing error.
High Point’s offense, however, never relented. Kelly, the Panthers’ second baseman, finished 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored. His two-run homer in the ninth inning capped the scoring. Oh, the catcher, also had a huge day, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a double, and five RBIs.
Jace Kohler added two home runs and four RBIs for the Panthers, who saw eight of nine starters record at least one hit. Landen Johnson went 3 for 5 with two RBIs.
Charleston Southern’s three runs all came in the second inning. Speirs went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Buccaneers, who managed nine hits but stranded six runners. Starter Cole Kapff (2-3) took the loss, surrendering eight runs on 11 hits over four-plus innings.
High Point relievers Mateo Wells and Camden Chalfant each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game.
The victory extended High Point’s winning streak to three games. The Panthers will go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon. Charleston Southern will look to avoid the sweep in the finale.
The final score far exceeded the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-4 High Point victory. The Panthers entered with a 61.90% win probability according to the service’s ELO system.
