Columbia at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Peter Dubie delivered six strong innings and DJ Dillehay provided the decisive blow with a three-run homer as the Brown Bears defeated the Columbia Lions 6-1 on Saturday at Murray Stadium in the opener of an Ivy League doubleheader.

The game’s most important sequence unfolded in the bottom of the fifth inning, breaking open what had been a tight contest. Brown led 2-1 entering the frame, but Columbia had just stranded two runners in the top half. Matt Luigs led off the Bears’ fifth with a single through the left side, stole second, and advanced to third after Mika Petersen walked. Following a pop out, Dillehay stepped in. The third baseman connected on a pitch and drove it over the left field fence for a three-run home run, scoring Luigs and Petersen and extending Brown’s lead to 5-1. The blast provided crucial breathing room and effectively sealed the victory.

Dubie, Brown’s starting pitcher, earned the win with a commanding performance. He allowed one earned run on three hits over six innings, striking out three and walking two. He worked efficiently, facing minimal threats after Columbia scored its lone run in the first inning without a hit. Dubie’s outing marked a sharp rebound from his previous start, a loss at Dartmouth where he allowed three earned runs.

Columbia’s run came in unconventional fashion in the top of the first. After two quick outs, Jack Kail reached on a walk, advanced on a passed ball, and eventually scored when Alex Temesvary was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. The Lions managed only three hits against Brown’s pitching trio and left seven runners on base.

Brown answered immediately in the bottom of the first. Luigs doubled down the left field line and later scored on a fielding error by Columbia shortstop Jack Snyder, tying the game at 1-1. The Bears took the lead for good in the second when Mark Henshon singled and scored on an RBI double by Jack Edmunds.

Following Dubie’s departure, the Brown bullpen was flawless. Camren Piwnicki threw two perfect innings of relief, and Christian Keel pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the victory. The Bears’ offense tallied nine hits, led by Luigs, who went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The loss dropped Columbia’s season record to 8-20 overall. Brown improved to 17-13. The result defied a pregame projection from Interstat’s ELO system, which had given Columbia a 68.90 percent probability to win, though the final score was closer to the outlet’s game simulator projection of a 7-4 Brown victory.

The two teams were scheduled to conclude the doubleheader later Saturday.
