Brainard’s Gem, Doyle’s Power Lead Nevada Over New Mexico in MW Opener
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — Aidan Brainard tossed six no-hit innings and Jacob Doyle homered twice Friday night, lifting Nevada to a 3-2 victory over New Mexico in a Mountain West series opener.
Brainard struck out seven and walked two before exiting after 88 pitches. The Wolf Pack ace has allowed just one earned run over his last 10 2/3 innings. Doyle provided all the necessary offense with solo homers in the second and third innings off Lobos starter Cristian Mogen, who took the loss.
Nevada built a 3-0 lead, adding a second-inning RBI single from Jake Harvey. New Mexico broke up the shutout on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly by Waslefsky and added a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Ashby. Andres Castro earned the final out for his first save.
Nevada improved to 18-14. New Mexico fell to 22-14-1.
