Quinnipiac vs Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Davis Hanson’s two-run single capped a three-run eighth-inning rally to force extra innings, and Colin Sloan delivered a walk-off single in the 12th to lift the Yale Bulldogs to a 6-5 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday afternoon and evening at Bush Field.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 20-10, overcame a five-run deficit and a series of missed opportunities before finally prevailing in a marathon contest that lasted over four hours. The Bobcats fell to 14-20.
Quinnipiac built its early lead largely on Yale miscues, scoring four unearned runs in the first two innings. In the first, a wild pitch and an RBI single by Kyle Garbowski plated two runs after an error extended the inning. In the second, another Yale error allowed Cole Constable to score. Ian Nilsen added a solo home run in the fourth for a 5-0 Bobcat advantage.
Yale chipped away against the Quinnipiac bullpen. Chace Chaplin and Hanson drove in runs in the fourth, and Jack Dauer added an RBI double in the fifth to make it 5-3.
The game turned decisively in the bottom of the eighth. Trailing by two, Yale loaded the bases with one out against reliever Ethan Freed. After a pitching change, Hanson greeted Maddex Labuda with a sharp single to left field, scoring Colin Sloan and Jack Hays to tie the game at 5. The inning ended on a line-drive double play, but the damage was done.
From there, the game became a battle of bullpens. The most critical performance came from Yale’s Nicholas West, who entered in the seventh and provided six shutout innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out three, effectively silencing the Quinnipiac offense through the 12th and giving his team a chance to win.
Quinnipiac’s relievers were nearly as effective, with Joseph Hiller, Jacob Belecky, Mason Ulsh, J.C. Franconere and Kevin Rusinak combining for 9 2/3 innings of scoreless work before the 12th. Rusinak took the loss after issuing a leadoff walk to Chris Diprima in the final frame. Diprima moved to second on a groundout before Sloan lined his game-winning hit to left field.
Quinnipiac outhit Yale 9-8 but grounded into two double plays, including a critical one with the bases loaded to end the top of the ninth. Yale left 10 runners on base but capitalized late.
The Bulldogs continue their season Saturday with a doubleheader at Cornell. Quinnipiac opens a series at Canisius on Friday.
