UC Santa Barbara at UCLA
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — In a stunning midweek upset, the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos rode a dominant combined shutout from three pitchers to blank the No. 1-ranked UCLA Bruins 4-0 on Tuesday night at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
The victory handed the Bruins just their third loss of the season, snapping a nine-game winning streak and improving the Gauchos’ record to 23-11. UCLA, which entered the game with a nation-leading 33-3 mark, was held scoreless for the first time this season.
The most important part of the game was the relentless efficiency of the UC Santa Barbara bullpen. After starter Calvin Proskey navigated three scoreless innings, the Gauchos turned to AJ Krodel and Cole Tryba, who extinguished multiple UCLA threats with sheer power. The duo combined for six perfect innings of relief, striking out nine consecutive batters at one point and allowing the Gauchos’ early lead to stand.
Krodel, named the top star for UC Santa Barbara, was particularly brilliant. Entering with one out in the fourth inning, he retired all 10 batters he faced, striking out four over 3 1/3 innings. This performance marked a sharp rebound for the right-hander, who had allowed two earned runs in his previous outing against UC San Diego. Tryba followed by striking out five of the eight batters he faced over the final 2 2/3 innings, sealing the shutout.
The Gauchos provided all the offense needed in the third inning against UCLA starter Angel Cervantes. With two outs, Ivan Kosciusko singled and Matt Esquer doubled to put runners on second and third. Leadoff hitter Jonah Kelly then delivered the key blow, lacing a two-run single to left-center field. A fielding error by the UCLA catcher allowed Kelly to advance to second, and he later scored on a double by Brendan Vasseur in the eighth inning. Vasseur eventually came home on an RBI single by Marco Beazizo to provide the final margin.
UCLA’s offense, one of the most potent in the country, was stifled throughout. The Bruins managed just five hits, all singles, and went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. Their best chance came in the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with two outs on a single and a hit batter, but Tryba entered and struck out Duce Gourson looking to end the threat.
The Bruins used seven pitchers in the loss, with Cervantes taking the decision after allowing two earned runs on three hits over three innings. The Gauchos collected nine hits total, with Kelly and Vasseur each recording two.
The result defied pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 7-6 UCLA victory and gave the Bruins a 61.3% probability to win based on its ELO rating system.
UC Santa Barbara will look to carry the momentum into a three-game series at UC Irvine beginning Friday. UCLA will regroup for a home series against Minnesota starting the same day. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch at UC Santa Barbara on April 28.
