Rain-Soaked Showdown Set for Los Angeles as UCLA Hosts UC Santa Barbara
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The nation’s top-ranked UCLA Bruins, riding a wave of dominant pitching, will face a stern test from in-state foe UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, with rain in the forecast.
The Bruins (33-2), boasting the best record in college baseball, return home after sweeping a three-game series at Rutgers. UCLA’s pitching staff has been formidable, allowing just four total runs in that series.
UCLA will send right-hander Landon Stump to the mound. Stump is coming off a brilliant outing, throwing six no-hit innings with five strikeouts in a 9-2 win at Rutgers on April 12. In his last four appearances, he has allowed just three earned runs over 16.2 innings.
They will face a Gauchos squad (22-11) that took two of three from UC San Diego over the weekend. UCSB’s hopes likely rest on the arm of ace Kellan Montgomery, who was spectacular in his last start. Montgomery threw eight strong innings, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out nine in a 3-1 win over UC San Diego on Sunday.
Montgomery has been a workhorse, pitching at least five innings in his last four starts and striking out 21 batters over his last 18.1 innings of work.
The Bruins’ offense, which averages over eight runs per game, is led by second baseman Aiden Aguayo, who drove in three runs in Sunday’s victory. They will look to continue their momentum against a Gauchos pitching staff that has been inconsistent at times.
UC Santa Barbara has shown resilience, winning a marathon 11-inning game 11-10 over UC San Diego on Saturday before Montgomery’s gem secured the series win Sunday.
Weather could be a significant factor, with a game-time temperature of 62 degrees and rain expected. The wet conditions may challenge both defenses and influence managerial decisions.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest projects to be a high-scoring, narrow affair with a predicted final score of UCLA 7, UC Santa Barbara 6.
This midweek clash is the first of a home-and-home series between the programs, who will meet again at UCSB on April 28. Following Tuesday’s game, UCLA will host Minnesota for a three-game series starting Friday, while the Gauchos travel to UC Irvine for a weekend set.
