Tennessee Tech at Austin Peay
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a wild, high-scoring affair that defied pregame projections, the Austin Peay Governors erupted for 15 runs over three middle innings to overpower the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 17-7 on Tuesday night at Raymond C. Hand Park.
The game, a stark contrast to the Interstat simulator’s prediction of a 4-3 Austin Peay victory, turned decisively in the fifth and sixth innings as the Governors’ offense broke open a tight contest.
Tennessee Tech (12-25) struck first, plating two runs in the opening frame on RBI singles from Nash Crowell and Eddie Garza. They added another in the third on a Crowell sacrifice fly to lead 3-0. Austin Peay starter Elijah Underhill lasted just 2 2/3 innings, but reliever Colin Carney provided critical stability. Entering with two on in the third, Carney recorded the final out and then tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. His performance halted the Golden Eagles’ momentum and set the stage for the comeback.
Austin Peay (17-20) chipped away with two runs in the second on a two-run double from Kyler Proctor and one in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Ty Wisdom. The game’s most important sequence followed in the bottom of the fifth. Trailing 3-2, the Governors’ offense exploded against the Tennessee Tech bullpen. After two walks, first baseman Trevor Conley launched a three-run homer to left field, giving Austin Peay its first lead at 6-3. The rally continued as Mason Pickering doubled and scored on an RBI double from Paris Pridgen to tie the game 7-7.
Tennessee Tech responded immediately in the top of the sixth, reclaiming a 7-7 lead on a two-run double from Crowell and a two-run single from Connor Crowson. But the Governors’ answer in the bottom half was emphatic and ultimately game-ending. They sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring four runs to take an 11-7 lead. The inning featured an RBI single from Cole Johnson, a run scoring on a wild pitch, an RBI double from Conley and an RBI single from Proctor.
Austin Peay put the game completely out of reach with a six-run seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Johnson and a two-run double from Ray Velazquez. The Governors’ bullpen, after Carney, was flawless. Chance Cox worked a perfect seventh inning, part of a combined effort that held Tennessee Tech scoreless over the final three frames.
Conley, mired in a recent slump that included an 0-for-4 performance in a loss to these same Golden Eagles just a week prior, was the top star for Austin Peay. He finished 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. Johnson went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs. Proctor drove in three runs, while Pridgen and Velazquez each had two RBIs.
For Tennessee Tech, Crowell delivered a standout performance, going 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs. The Golden Eagles managed nine hits but left opportunities unanswered after their early outburst.
The victory gives Austin Peay a measure of revenge after losing 7-5 to Tennessee Tech in Cookeville on April 7. Both teams open conference series at home on Friday, with Austin Peay hosting Bellarmine and Tennessee Tech welcoming Southeast Missouri State.
