Dolphins Hold Off Eagles in ASUN Opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — Derek Bermudez drove in three runs and Jacksonville’s bullpen threw five hitless innings as the Dolphins defeated Florida Gulf Coast 6-4 in an ASUN Conference opener Friday at Swanson Stadium.

The Dolphins scored six unanswered runs, keyed by Bermudez’s two-run single in the eighth. Jacksonville relievers Kyle Hopper, Grant Brooks and Austin Williamson combined for four perfect innings after Alex Walsh’s rough start.

Florida Gulf Coast’s Evan Dempsey struck out nine over six scoreless innings, but the Eagles’ early 3-0 lead, built on a hit batter, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, did not hold. Cayden Hessemyer had two RBIs for the Eagles.

Jacksonville improved to 16-17. Florida Gulf Coast fell to 20-12.
