ASUN Baseball Preview: Jacksonville Dolphins at Florida Gulf Coast Eagles

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, riding high near the top of the ASUN Conference, host the struggling Jacksonville Dolphins in a three-game series opener Friday at Swanson Stadium.

The Eagles (20-11) enter with momentum after taking the final game of their series at West Georgia last Saturday, 6-2. The Dolphins (15-17) look to snap a two-game skid after being shut out 3-0 by Stetson in their most recent contest.

A key matchup will feature Jacksonville’s ace, Brendan Holland, on the mound. The right-hander has been a bright spot despite recent team losses, coming off a dominant performance where he threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven against Stetson. In his last four starts, he has a 1.69 ERA with 23 strikeouts over 21 innings.

For the Eagles, two-way player Sebastian Lippman is a catalyst. At the plate, he hit a two-run homer against Miami (Fla.) last week. On the mound, he has been equally effective, most recently delivering 4 2/3 hitless innings of relief with three strikeouts in the win over West Georgia. In his last four pitching appearances, he has not allowed a run.

The series marks a contrast in trajectories. Florida Gulf Coast has won six of its last nine games. Jacksonville has lost five of its last seven, though it did secure a midweek road win at Florida on March 31.

Statistical projections offer a split verdict. The Interstat game simulator predicts a narrow 4-3 victory for Jacksonville. However, the same service’s ELO rating system gives Florida Gulf Coast a 62.5% probability to win Friday’s contest.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 76 degrees.

The series continues Saturday and Sunday in Fort Myers before both teams embark on midweek non-conference road games: Jacksonville at UCF and Florida Gulf Coast at Florida Atlantic on Tuesday.
