Stony Brook at Sacred Heart
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Interstat) — Peter Link launched two late home runs, powering the Sacred Heart Pioneers to an 11-5 comeback victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw the Pioneers overcome an early four-run deficit, fueled by 12 hits and a pair of costly Stony Brook errors in the late innings.
Stony Brook (9-20) struck first with an unearned run in the opening frame. Center fielder Nick Zampieron reached on an error, stole third and scored on Mike Villani’s groundout. The Seawolves then erupted for four runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead, capitalizing on two walks, a hit batter and a critical error by Sacred Heart shortstop Gavin Donohue. Zampieron and Nicholas Dromboski each had run-scoring hits in the inning.
Sacred Heart (8-17) chipped away, tying the game at 5-5 by the sixth inning. Donohue drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Jacob Schmutz scored on a wild pitch. The Pioneers then seized control for good in the seventh.
With one on and one out in the seventh, Link connected for his first homer of the day, a two-run shot to left field off reliever Kincaid Bergthold that broke the tie and gave Sacred Heart an 8-5 lead. An inning later, he provided the exclamation point. After Kyle Cincinnati walked, Link homered again to nearly the same spot, a two-run blast that extended the Pioneer advantage to 10-5. Sacred Heart added an unearned run later in the inning on a Stony Brook throwing error.
Link, who entered the game in a 1-for-14 slump over his previous four contests, finished 2 for 5 with four RBIs. Donohue added three hits and two RBIs for the Pioneers.
The Stony Brook offense, which managed only four hits, was held in check after its fifth-inning outburst. Sacred Heart reliever Andrew Sager earned the win with 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief, striking out two. A quartet of Pioneer relievers — Sager, Christian Trantino, Hector Alejandro and Graham Willerer — combined to allow just two hits and one earned run over the final 6 2/3 innings.
Stony Brook starter Luca Mannino allowed two earned runs in 1 2/3 innings. Evan Kay took the loss, surrendering two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Seawolves relievers Reilly Bridges and Bergthold were charged with four earned runs over the sixth and seventh innings.
The result flipped the pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 5-3 Stony Brook victory, and its ELO system gave the Seawolves a 57% probability to win.
Stony Brook travels to face Hofstra for a three-game series starting Friday. Sacred Heart opens a three-game series at Iona on Friday.
