Nevada at Sacramento State
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Sam Harry homered twice and drove in six runs to power the Sacramento State Hornets to an 11-2 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack in non-conference baseball action Monday at John Smith Field.
The Hornets, who entered the game with a 12-20 record, defied pregame projections from Interstat, which had given Nevada a 51.7% probability to win and projected a 7-3 Wolf Pack victory. Instead, Sacramento State erupted for 12 hits and capitalized on Nevada errors to secure a lopsided win.
Harry, the Hornets’ center fielder, was the catalyst. He ignited the offense in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to right field, measured at 98 mph off the bat and traveling 387 feet, to cut into an early 2-0 Nevada lead. The Wolf Pack had taken that lead before recording an out in the top of the first, as the provided play-by-play indicates two runs scored during the initial at-bats, though the sequence of those scoring plays was not detailed.
The game turned decisively in the third and fourth innings. After Nevada reliever Aidan Brainard exited with two scoreless innings, the Hornets struck for three runs in the third. Harry delivered a two-run single to give Sacramento State a 3-2 lead, and Erick Dessens followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.
The floodgates opened in the fourth. Following a Nevada fielding error, Harry crushed a three-run homer to center field, his second of the game, to extend the lead to 7-2. After a walk, Dessens connected for a two-run shot to right-center, capping a five-run inning and pushing the advantage to 9-2.
Dessens finished 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. Harry’s 3-for-4, six-RBI performance continued a hot streak; he had recorded hits in his four previous games.
Nevada managed only five hits against five Sacramento State pitchers. The Wolf Pack’s lone bright spot after the first inning was a solo home run by first baseman Jayce Dobie in the sixth. Nevada’s other run scored in the fourth on an RBI single by Cruz Jr.
The Hornets’ bullpen was dominant. Following starter Devin James, who threw three hitless innings, relievers Ian Winterhalder and Ari Kligman combined for 3 2/3 scoreless frames, allowing just one hit. Bryce Stockton surrendered the Dobie home run in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
Nevada used six pitchers, with Brainard, Eric Valdez and Mahiro Tomita providing scoreless relief outings, but the damage was done during the third and fourth innings.
The most important part of the game was the bottom of the fourth inning. With the score 4-2 and two runners on due to a critical Nevada error, Sam Harry’s three-run homer broke the game open, transforming a tight contest into a commanding 7-2 lead. This swing not only provided crucial runs but also demoralized the Wolf Pack, and the inning continued with Dessens’ two-run homer to establish an insurmountable seven-run cushion. This explosive five-run frame defined the lopsided outcome.
With the loss, Nevada falls to 15-11. Sacramento State improves to 13-20. The Hornets host Fresno State on Tuesday, while Nevada returns home to face UC Davis.
