SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The San Francisco Dons, holding a winning record at 16-13, host the struggling California Golden Bears (14-16) in a non-conference matchup Monday afternoon.

The Golden Bears aim to halt a three-game skid after being swept at home by Georgia Tech, culminating in a 9-3 loss Saturday. California’s recent fortunes have largely followed the performance of right-hander Gavin Eddy, who is slated to start. Eddy (1-3, 4.50 ERA) has been a study in extremes. He tossed six no-hit innings in a win at Wake Forest on March 29 and followed with seven more no-hit frames in a hard-luck loss at Boston College. However, he was tagged for four runs in a loss to North Carolina on March 15 and allowed four earned runs over five innings in Saturday’s defeat.

San Francisco looks to rebound after dropping two of three on the road at Loyola Marymount, including a 10-7 loss Saturday. A key arm for the Dons is reliever Paul Wheeler, who has been effective lately. Wheeler has not allowed an earned run in four of his last five appearances, including two hitless innings with two strikeouts in Saturday’s game.

The Dons hold the edge in the season series, having won the first meeting. The teams are scheduled to play again in Berkeley on April 21 and April 24.

California’s upcoming schedule offers little respite, with a three-game ACC series at Pittsburgh this weekend before hosting Louisville. San Francisco opens West Coast Conference play at home against San Diego on Friday.

First pitch is set for 3 p.m. under cloudy skies in San Francisco.
