Southern California at UCLA
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The UCLA Bruins showcased their potent offense in a commanding 10-4 victory over the Southern California Trojans on Sunday evening, completing a three-game sweep in a Big Ten conference series at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the middle innings, as UCLA transformed a one-run deficit into a lead it would not relinquish. After Southern California capitalized on UCLA errors to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth, the Bruins responded immediately and forcefully in the bottom half.
Mulivai Levu, the game’s top star, led off the inning with a solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit to one. Following a single by Roman Martin, Will Gasparino launched a two-run homer to left field, putting the Bruins ahead 5-4. That sequence shifted the game’s momentum permanently in UCLA’s favor.
Levu, the Bruins’ first baseman, was instrumental in the win, going 3 for 5 with two home runs and three RBIs. His second homer, a two-run shot in the sixth inning, scored Roch Cholowsky and extended UCLA’s lead to 7-4. Cholowsky, the shortstop, also had three hits, including a three-run homer in the eighth inning that provided the final margin. Dean West started the scoring for UCLA with a solo home run in the first inning.
The Bruins (29-2, 3-0 Big Ten) amassed 15 hits against five Trojans pitchers. Starter Andrew Johnson took the loss for Southern California, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits over six innings. The Trojans (27-6, 0-3) managed just six hits, with designated hitter Augie Lopez contributing a solo home run in the second inning and a single.
UCLA’s bullpen was dominant, combining for five innings of one-hit, shutout relief. Zach Strickland was particularly effective, striking out three over two perfect innings to close the game. Starter Landon Stump went four innings, allowing two earned runs.
Southern California’s runs came via the long ball and UCLA miscues. In addition to Lopez’s homer, the Trojans scored two unearned runs in the fifth on a throwing error by third baseman Roman Martin and another in the sixth when a run crossed on a throwing error by pitcher Michael Iwanaga.
The victory extended UCLA’s winning streak and solidified its elite national standing, while the Trojans, who entered the series with just three losses, were handed their first conference setbacks. The Bruins’ offensive display over the weekend, outscoring Southern California 31-16 in the three games, proved the difference.
UCLA next travels to face Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. Southern California looks to rebound at UC Santa Barbara, also on Tuesday.
