Maryland at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — Pierce Herrenbruck and a parade of Ohio State relievers combined on a five-hit shutout Sunday, blanking Maryland 7-0 to complete a three-game Big Ten series sweep at Bill Davis Stadium.

The Buckeyes (17-13, 3-0 Big Ten) broke open a scoreless game with a five-run second inning, capitalizing on wildness from Maryland starter Austin Weiss and a costly error. The Terrapins (12-17, 0-3) out-hit Ohio State 6-5 but went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine baserunners.

The most important part of the game was the bottom of the second inning, when Ohio State sent 11 batters to the plate against Weiss. The left-hander walked four batters in the frame, including Alex Bemis with the bases loaded to force in the first run. After Weiss was replaced by Andrew Koshy, Henry Kaczmar delivered the key blow, a two-run single through the left side. Dane Harvey followed with another two-run single up the middle to cap the rally, giving the Buckeyes a 5-0 lead they would not relinquish.

Herrenbruck, the top star for Ohio State, earned the win with 5 2/3 dominant innings. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out five, extending a strong run of form after throwing 4 2/3 hitless innings in relief against Minnesota on March 29. The Buckeyes used four relievers — Luke Carrell, Nick Sawyer, Lincoln McVicker and Landon Edwards — to record the final 10 outs without allowing a run.

Maryland’s bullpen was equally impressive after the second-inning outburst. Koshy, Jake Yeager and James Gladden combined for 6 2/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief, striking out nine batters. Their efforts kept the Terrapins within striking distance, but the offense could not solve Herrenbruck or the Ohio State bullpen.

Ohio State added two unearned runs late. In the seventh, Lee Ellis scored from third on a throwing error by Maryland third baseman David Mendez after a fielder’s choice. In the eighth, Noah Furcht scored on a passed ball.

Kaczmar finished 1 for 5 with two RBIs for Ohio State. Ellis doubled, walked twice and scored two runs, stealing three bases. Brayden Martin had two of Maryland’s six hits.

The victory gave Ohio State a sweep of the weekend series after winning 10-8 on Friday and 14-12 on Saturday. The Buckeyes’ next game is Tuesday at home against Bowling Green. Maryland, which has lost five of its last six games, travels to face Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected an Ohio State 8-2 victory, though its ELO rating system gave Maryland a 57.4 percent probability to win.
