Florida State at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — Bryson Moore delivered a masterful performance on the mound, and the Florida State offense provided more than enough support as the 10th-ranked Seminoles clinched a key Atlantic Coast Conference series with a 9-3 victory over Virginia on Saturday evening at Davenport Field.

The most important part of the game was Moore’s dominant start, which set an overpowering tone and stifled a potent Cavaliers lineup. The right-hander pitched seven perfect innings, retiring all 21 batters he faced while striking out seven. He did not allow a hit or a walk, completely controlling the game from the outset and forcing Virginia to play from a deep deficit.

Florida State (24-7, 5-3 ACC) broke through in the second inning against Virginia starter Lucas Hartman. After a walk to Alex Paulino, Cal Fisher launched a two-run homer, his first of the season, to left field to give the Seminoles an early lead.

The Seminoles extended their advantage in the third. Cam Dowd singled, stole second and scored on a double by James Carns. Following a pitching change that brought in Hartman, Fisher singled and later scored on an RBI single from Carter McCulley, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Florida State added two more in the fifth on an RBI single from McCulley and a run-scoring double by DeAmez Williams. They broke the game open in the seventh, scoring three times on McCulley’s second RBI double, a groundout from Williams and a sacrifice fly by Cam Sheffield, making it 9-0.

Moore’s perfect game bid ended when he was relieved by Ben Purcell to start the eighth inning. Virginia (24-9, 7-4) immediately broke up the combined no-hit bid and the shutout. Kyle Johnson led off the inning with a solo home run to center field, his fifth of the season. Two batters later, Antonio Perrotta followed with a solo shot to right, his third, cutting the deficit to 9-2.

Virginia added a third run in the ninth on a solo homer by Henry Tiroly off Purcell before Gabe Nard entered to record the final out and secure the series win for Florida State.

McCulley led the Seminoles’ 12-hit attack, going 2 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Fisher finished 2 for 3 with the home run, two RBIs, three runs scored and two walks. Williams drove in two runs.

Hartman took the loss for Virginia, allowing two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief. The Cavaliers managed just five hits, with the three solo home runs accounting for all their scoring. Virginia relievers Christian Lucarelli, Matt Augustin and Jayden Stroman combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings to keep the game within reach after the early damage.

The victory gave Florida State the series after the teams split the first two games. The Seminoles’ win ran counter to pregame projections from Interstat, which gave Virginia a 53.2% probability to win and simulated a 7-6 Cavaliers victory.

Florida State improved to 24-7 overall, while Virginia fell to 24-9. The Seminoles travel to face Jacksonville on Sunday before a midweek showdown with in-state rival Florida. Virginia hosts James Madison on Tuesday before resuming ACC play at Notre Dame next weekend.
