Portland at Seattle
BELLEVUE, Wash. (Interstat) — Travis Farrell authored a masterpiece on the mound Thursday, pitching a complete game and striking out 10 to lead the struggling Seattle Redhawks to a 5-1 victory over the Portland Pilots at Bannerwood Park.
Farrell, a right-hander, allowed just six hits and one earned run, dominating a Portland lineup that entered with an 18-8 record and the confidence of a team projected by simulators to win easily. His performance was a stark reversal from his last start, a loss to San Francisco on March 27 where he surrendered six earned runs. This time, he was in command from the outset, walking only one batter and efficiently silencing the Pilots for most of the afternoon.
The most important part of the game came in the bottom of the second inning, when Seattle capitalized on Portland’s defensive miscues to build an insurmountable lead. With the game scoreless, Portland starter Trey Swygart, who had opened the game as the designated hitter, took the mound and was sharp initially. But after Ryan Hale doubled, Jacob Beauchaine reached on a critical error by Portland second baseman Josh Landwehr, allowing Hale to score the game’s first run.
The floodgates opened from there. Beauchaine stole second, Josh Cunnigan walked, and Ryder Manale doubled both runners home. Another Portland error, this time by first baseman Cooper Nitowitz on a grounder by Ben Stinnett, allowed Cunnigan to cross the plate. When the chaotic inning ended, Seattle had a 3-0 lead, with only one of the runs earned.
Swygart, who went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and a walk, was pulled after the inning. His pitching line showed four innings pitched, no hits allowed, no earned runs and six strikeouts, but he was tagged with the loss due to the unearned runs that scored during his defensive team’s collapse.
Seattle added another run in the fourth off reliever Carter Gaston. Beauchaine was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Cunnigan to make it 4-0.
Portland’s only offense came in the seventh when shortstop Cole Katayama-Stall launched a solo home run off Farrell, his second hit of the day. The Pilots threatened again in the ninth, putting two runners on with one out, but Farrell induced a strikeout and a flyout to left field to seal his complete game.
Seattle added an insurance run in the eighth without a hit. Pinch-runner Cash Erdman, running for Manale after his second double of the game, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch by Nolan Umlandt.
The win improved Seattle’s record to 6-18, while Portland fell to 18-9. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which gave Portland a 76.5 percent probability to win and simulated a final score of 8-3 in the Pilots’ favor.
The two teams continue their series at Bannerwood Park on Friday and Saturday.
