Connecticut at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass. (Interstat) — Camden Righi drove in eight runs, including a three-run homer to cap a nine-run seventh inning, as the Connecticut Huskies erupted for a 21-5 victory over the Northeastern Huskies in a seven-inning college baseball game Tuesday afternoon and evening at Parsons Field.

The offensive explosion, which saw Connecticut pound out 11 hits and draw 14 walks, defied pregame projections that favored Northeastern and overwhelmed a pitching staff that used seven hurlers. The win evened Connecticut’s record at 15-15, while Northeastern fell to 14-13.

The most important part of the game was Connecticut’s relentless offensive pressure, which transformed a competitive contest into a rout during the middle and late innings. After Northeastern closed to within 4-3 in the second inning and 5-4 in the third, Connecticut broke the game open with a four-run fourth, highlighted by a three-run double from Tyler Minick. They then sent 13 batters to the plate in a nine-run sixth inning, a rally fueled by walks, timely hitting and a Northeastern error, before sealing the outcome with another nine-run barrage in the seventh.

Righi was the catalyst throughout, finishing 4 for 5. His day included a two-run triple in the second inning, a bases-loaded walk in the fourth, a two-run single in the sixth and the final exclamation point—a three-run homer to right-center in the seventh. Jackson Marshall added a two-run homer in the first inning for Connecticut.

Despite the lopsided final score, Northeastern showed early fight. Carmelo Musacchia led off the bottom of the first with a home run, and Harrison Feinberg added a solo shot in the third. An unearned run in the fourth on a Mike Aschettino groundout accounted for Northeastern’s final run, bringing the score to 8-5 before Connecticut’s late onslaught.

Connecticut’s bullpen combination of Joseph Talarico, Sean Finn, JT Caruso and Paxton Meyers was dominant, combining for 5 1/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief. Meyers earned the win with two perfect innings to close the game. Tom Mahoney provided a bright spot for Northeastern with two scoreless innings of relief in the fourth and fifth.

The game, which started in the afternoon and concluded under the lights, was called after seven innings due to a conference run-rule provision.

Connecticut next hosts Creighton for a three-game series starting Thursday. Northeastern is scheduled to begin a series against Monmouth on Thursday.
