Eastern Kentucky at Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Cam Pruitt drove in four runs and the Lipscomb Bisons used a six-run outburst in the first two innings to cruise past the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 9-2 in an ASUN Conference baseball game Sunday at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.

The victory gave Lipscomb (13-12, 2-1 ASUN) the series win after the teams split the first two games, including a 15-3 Eastern Kentucky rout on Saturday. The loss dropped Eastern Kentucky to 8-20 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The most important part of the game came immediately, as Lipscomb responded to Eastern Kentucky’s early two-run advantage with a relentless offensive display in the bottom of the first inning. The Colonels had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the frame without a hit, capitalizing on walks and a hit batter, but the Bisons quickly erased it.

Facing Eastern Kentucky starter Stockham, Lipscomb’s Brayden Miller led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch, and took third on a throwing error. After a walk loaded the bases, Pruitt delivered his first key hit, a single to right field that scored Miller. A pitching change to Cade Schneider did not stem the tide. Jaden Thomas lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the game, and Damion Kenealy Jr. followed with a two-run single to center, giving Lipscomb a 4-2 lead it would not relinquish.

The Bisons extended their lead in the second inning, again fueled by Pruitt. After two Eastern Kentucky errors put runners in scoring position, Pruitt singled to right field, driving in two unearned runs to make it 6-2.

Pruitt finished the day 3 for 4. He added a run-scoring groundout in the fourth inning and another single in the seventh. Kai Holm provided late insurance, lining a two-run single up the middle in the eighth inning to cap the scoring at 9-2.

The early offensive support was more than enough for a parade of Lipscomb pitchers. Starter Caden Shanks and Jackson Lee combined for the first five innings, with Lee earning the win after allowing two runs on four hits over 3 2/3 innings. The Bisons’ bullpen was dominant, as Collin Bosley-Smith, Cody Underwood and Kaleb Kantola closed out the final four innings without allowing a hit. Kantola pitched the final two frames, allowing just one walk while striking out one.

Eastern Kentucky managed only six hits, with Ronan Alvarez and Tait Shevey each collecting two. The Colonels scored their first run in the opening inning on a bases-loaded walk and added their final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Conner Reid. Their best chance to rally came in the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out, but reliever Cody Underwood induced a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat.

Hayden Collins provided a bright spot for Eastern Kentucky, delivering three scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.

The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw Lipscomb outhit Eastern Kentucky 12 to 6. The Bisons’ victory moved them above .500 for the season, while the Colonels fell to 8-20.

Lipscomb next travels to face Bellarmine for a three-game conference series starting Thursday. Eastern Kentucky returns home to host Austin Peay in a conference series beginning Thursday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Lipscomb 6-2 victory, and its ELO system gave the Bisons a 68.5% probability to win.
