Duke Routs Florida State to Salvage Series Finale
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Duke erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning, powered by Matthew Strand’s grand slam, and cruised to an 11-4 victory over Florida State on Sunday afternoon at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The win avoided a series sweep for the Blue Devils in the Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.
Strand’s blast to deep left field broke the game open. RJ Hamilton and Brooks Perez each drove in three runs for Duke, which pounded out 12 hits. Blue Devils starter Andy Leon dominated, striking out nine and allowing just one earned run over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win.
The Seminoles, who had won the series’ first two games, were held to eight hits. Jake Echols provided two scoreless relief innings for Florida State. Duke improved to 18-12 overall, while Florida State fell to 21-6.
