Duke at Florida State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Florida State Seminoles look to continue their strong start to Atlantic Coast Conference play when they host the Duke Blue Devils in an afternoon matchup Saturday at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.
First pitch is set for 3 p.m. EDT under clear skies with a forecast temperature of 82 degrees.
Florida State (19-5, 3-3 ACC) enters with the conference’s best overall record but is coming off a 5-0 road loss to in-state rival Florida on Tuesday. The Seminoles took two of three from North Carolina State last weekend, outscoring the Wolfpack 26-10 in the victories.
Duke (17-10, 4-5) arrives after a wild 9-8 midweek win over East Carolina, powered by a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance from designated hitter Kaden Smith that included a home run. Smith, a key offensive catalyst, has three homers and 11 RBIs in his last 10 games.
The Seminoles will rely on right-hander Cooper Whited, who has been dominant in relief. In his last three appearances spanning 10 innings, Whited has allowed just two earned runs on five hits while striking out 12. He threw 3 2/3 hitless innings against Florida on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils have struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses over their last seven games. Their pitching will be tested by a potent Florida State lineup that averages over nine runs per game at home.
In the series opener Friday, Florida State shut out Duke.
According to Interstat, the Seminoles are projected as strong favorites with a 62.4% win probability and a simulated final score of Florida State 7, Duke 4.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon.
