Oregon at UC San Diego
LA JOLLA, Calif. (Interstat) — Miles Gosztola was nearly untouchable over seven dominant innings, and Jack Brooks provided the decisive offensive blow with a three-run homer, leading the No. 7-ranked Oregon Ducks to a 6-0 victory over the UC San Diego Tritons on Tuesday night at UCSD Triton Baseball Field.
The most important sequence of the game arrived in the top of the fifth inning, breaking a scoreless pitcher’s duel. After four innings of silence against UC San Diego starter Evan Seneres, the Ducks (20-4) pounced on reliever Jake Villar. Maddox Molony popped out to begin the frame, but Bennett Mabeus reached on a bunt single and Gabe Miranda followed with a single up the middle. That brought Brooks to the plate, and the center fielder launched Villar’s offering deep over the right-field wall for a three-run home run, providing all the offense Oregon would ultimately need.
That outburst was more than enough support for Gosztola (3-0), who delivered a masterful performance. The right-hander carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, finally surrendering a one-out single through the right side to Michael Camacho. That was the only baserunner Gosztola allowed, striking out eight Tritons and inducing weak contact throughout his 7-inning, 101-pitch outing. He retired the first 19 batters he faced before Camacho’s hit.
Leo Uelmen preserved the shutout with two perfect innings of relief, striking out one, to seal the combined one-hitter. The Ducks’ pitching staff faced just two batters over the minimum.
Oregon added insurance late. Jax Gimenez led off the eighth inning with a solo home run off Tritons reliever Quincey Brown. In the ninth, Molony hit a solo shot of his own, and Brooks added an RBI double, finishing the night 2 for 3 with a walk and four RBIs. Miranda contributed three of Oregon’s nine hits.
The Tritons (9-12) struggled to generate any offense against the Ducks’ arms. Seneres was sharp in a no-decision, allowing just one hit and one walk over four scoreless innings with one strikeout. Villar (0-1) took the loss after being charged with three runs on four hits in two innings of work. Nathan Huy threw a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts, and Brown allowed three runs on four hits over the final two frames.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for UC San Diego. Oregon rebounded from a 12-inning loss to Northwestern in its previous contest.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a high-scoring affair with Oregon winning 8-6, and its ELO system gave the Ducks a 73.5% probability to win, but Gosztola’s brilliance rendered those forecasts moot.
The two teams meet again Wednesday at Triton Ballpark to conclude the brief two-game midweek series. Oregon will then travel to face UC Santa Barbara for a three-game set starting Friday. UC San Diego opens Big West Conference play on the road at UC Davis on Friday.
