San Jose State at Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — Two Bay Area programs seeking momentum will meet Tuesday when the Santa Clara Broncos host the San Jose State Spartans in nonconference baseball action at Stephen Schott Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PDT under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 74 degrees.
Both teams enter with sub-.500 records. The visiting Spartans are 10-12 overall, while the Broncos sit at 9-13. Each squad is coming off a series loss, with San Jose State falling 8-0 to Connecticut on Sunday and Santa Clara dropping a 6-5 decision at San Francisco the same day.
A key matchup will feature San Jose State right-hander Dylan Smith, the team’s probable starter, against a Santa Clara bullpen that includes reliever Nick Chow. Smith has been a workhorse, logging at least five innings in three of his last four starts. He struck out eight in a loss to Connecticut last time out but was dominant in a 3-0 win over New Mexico on March 15, allowing just two hits over six scoreless innings.
For Santa Clara, Chow has been a reliable arm out of the pen. The right-hander has not allowed an earned run in three of his last four appearances, including 1 2/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts at San Francisco on Sunday.
The Broncos won the most recent meeting between the rivals, 8-6, on Feb. 18. San Jose State, however, has shown resilience in close games this season, with four of its 10 wins coming in extra innings.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-4 victory for the Spartans.
Following Tuesday’s contest, both teams dive into weekend conference series. San Jose State travels to UNLV, while Santa Clara hosts Loyola Marymount. The two local foes will meet again at Stephen Schott Stadium next Monday.
