Florida Atlantic at Miami (FL)
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — The Miami Hurricanes erupted for eight runs across the second and fourth innings Tuesday night, overcoming an early six-run deficit to defeat the Florida Atlantic Owls 10-6 at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park.
The game’s pivotal shift occurred in the bottom of the second inning. Trailing 6-1, the Hurricanes sent 10 batters to the plate against two FAU pitchers, scoring four runs on three hits, two walks, and aggressive baserunning to slash the lead to one. The rally began with a walk to JD Sheahan, who promptly stole second and third. After a walk to Alonzo Alvarez, Daniel Dubovik drove in Sheahan with a single. A fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly by Blake Ogden brought in another run before Dorian Gonzalez Jr. singled and stole second. Jason Sosa then delivered the key blow, a two-run double to right field that tied the game at 6-5 and chased FAU starter Dalton Robinson.
Miami seized control for good in the fourth. With the score still 6-6, the Hurricanes loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch by FAU reliever Cade Juntunen allowed Gonzalez to score the go-ahead run. Alvarez followed with a two-run single to left center, extending the lead to 9-6. Alvarez finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two walks.
The Owls, who fell to 14-11, struck first with a six-run top of the first, capitalizing on wildness from Miami starter Jake Dorn. The inning featured just one hit—a single by Christian Perazza—but was fueled by four walks, a hit batter, and a costly fielding error by Miami shortstop Dubovik. Dorn recorded only two outs before being relieved.
Florida Atlantic’s Patrick Ward provided a brief spark in the fourth, launching a two-run homer to deep center off reliever Nico DeRias to momentarily tie the game at 6-6. It was one of 11 hits for the Owls, but they grounded into two double plays to stifle later threats.
From there, Miami’s bullpen dominated. TJ Coats, Brixton Lofgren, and Ryan Bilka combined for 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out five. Coats earned the win. Zach Kilby was sharp in late relief for FAU, throwing two perfect innings with two strikeouts.
The Hurricanes, who improved to 19-6, added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Sheahan. They finished with 10 hits and showcased relentless pressure on the bases, stealing five bags.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Miami, which also defeated Florida Atlantic 11-7 on Feb. 25 in Boca Raton. The game defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had forecast a narrower 7-6 Miami win.
Florida Atlantic opens a three-game series at Rice on Friday. Miami begins Atlantic Coast Conference play Thursday at Clemson.
