William & Mary at Old Dominion
NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — A dominant performance by its bullpen and a key two-run single from Jett Humphreys propelled William & Mary to a 6-3 victory over Old Dominion in nonconference baseball Tuesday night at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
The game’s decisive sequence unfolded in the top of the fourth inning. Trailing 3-0 after the Monarchs scored all their runs in the first three frames, the Tribe loaded the bases with no outs against Old Dominion starter Nick Sulpizio. After a pitching change, Ben Tanton recorded two quick strikeouts, but William & Mary’s Henry Ecker worked a walk to force in the team’s first run.
That brought Humphreys to the plate. The designated hitter delivered a sharp single up the middle, scoring two runs to tie the game at 3-3. The hit shifted momentum decisively to the visitors and knocked Tanton from the game.
William & Mary took the lead for good an inning later. In the top of the sixth, Nate Iriotakis singled, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice, and scored on another RBI single from Humphreys, his third of the night, making it 4-3.
The Tribe added two insurance runs in the eighth, capitalizing on Old Dominion miscues. Joe Woolwine scored on a throwing error by pitcher Jayce Park on a Humphreys sacrifice bunt attempt. Later in the inning, Henry Francella lifted a sacrifice fly to score Ecker.
That was more than enough for a William & Mary relief corps that was nearly flawless. After starter Stephen Christopher allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings, a quartet of Tribe relievers combined to throw 6 1/3 innings of no-hit, shutout baseball. Charlie Richwine, Jack Weight and Tom Bourque were particularly effective, with Richwine earning the win and Bourque the save.
The Monarchs struck early. In the first inning, back-to-back singles from Tyler Aiken and Evan Morales set the table for Zach Leite, who doubled down the right-field line to drive in both runs. Old Dominion added a third run in the third on an RBI single from Steven Young, scoring Maverick Stallings, who had reached on a walk and advanced on an error.
Old Dominion’s Cole Lanford provided a bright spot with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three.
With the win, William & Mary evened its season record at 11-12. Old Dominion fell to an identical 11-12 mark. The teams are scheduled to meet again on April 7 in Williamsburg.
The victory extended William & Mary’s winning streak to four games, while Old Dominion has now lost three of its last four. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose ELO system gave the Monarchs a 64.4% probability to win, though the final score was close to its simulated prediction of a 5-4 Tribe victory.
