Winthrop Routs Davidson Behind Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting

ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — The Winthrop Eagles used a five-run fifth inning to power past the Davidson Wildcats 11-1 on Tuesday at Winthrop Ballpark.

Evan Vandenbosch led a dominant pitching effort for Winthrop, striking out six over four scoreless innings to earn the win. The Eagles broke a 1-1 tie in the third and pulled away in the fifth, highlighted by Alan Benhardt’s two-run single. Benhardt finished with three RBIs.

Four Davidson relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings, but the Wildcats mustered only six hits. Winthrop also had six hits but capitalized on walks and a key Davidson error to score seven unearned runs.

Winthrop improved to 18-7. Davidson fell to 10-12.
