Davidson at Winthrop
ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — The Winthrop Eagles, riding a strong start to the season, will host the Davidson Wildcats in a non-conference midweek baseball game Tuesday at Winthrop Ballpark.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 75 degrees.
Winthrop (17-7) enters with momentum, having won two of three on the road at Sacramento State last weekend, including a 7-5 victory Saturday. The Eagles’ offense has been potent, averaging over seven runs per game during their current 8-3 stretch.
A key hitter for Winthrop is designated hitter Cornelius Wouters. He drove in two runs on three hits in Saturday’s win and is 10 for 34 (.294) with six RBIs over his last nine games.
Davidson (10-11) looks to rebound after dropping two of three at La Salle, including a 10-1 loss Sunday. The Wildcats’ pitching staff will aim to slow the Eagles’ bats.
A player to watch for the Wildcats is reliever Garrett Pyne. In Sunday’s loss, he threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Over his last six appearances spanning 11 innings, Pyne has allowed just one earned run, lowering his ERA to 4.15 for the season.
The Wildcats’ recent series have been high-scoring affairs, with the team allowing 10 or more runs in four of their last seven games.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a close contest, favoring Winthrop 7-6.
Following Tuesday’s game, Winthrop opens a Big South Conference series at home against Charleston Southern on Friday. Davidson begins Atlantic 10 play by hosting Dayton on Friday.
