SIU Edwardsville at Saint Louis
ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — Intrastate foes Saint Louis and SIU Edwardsville will meet Tuesday afternoon at Billiken Sports Center in a midweek nonconference clash between teams with nearly identical records.
The Billikens (11-12) host the Cougars (11-13) in a 6:30 p.m. first pitch under cloudy skies with temperatures around 53 degrees.
SIUE brings a potent, albeit inconsistent, offense north after a wild weekend series at Morehead State. The Cougars won three of four, including a 28-23 victory Sunday and a 23-8 win Friday. Shortstop Chase Bloomer has been the catalyst, driving in 11 runs over his last three games. In Sunday’s slugfest, he went 3 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs. For the season, Bloomer is batting .410 with five homers and 24 RBIs over his last 10 contests.
Saint Louis is looking to rebound after a 14-3 loss at Saint Bonaventure on Sunday. The Billikens had won their previous two games in the series. Utility player Max McGwire is a key two-way contributor, having pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief over his last three appearances while also seeing time as a designated hitter.
The teams last met on Feb. 24 in Edwardsville, where the Cougars erupted for a 17-7 victory. Bloomer went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs in that contest.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Tuesday’s rematch is projected to be a tight one, with Saint Louis edging SIUE 7-6.
Both teams open conference series at home this weekend. Saint Louis hosts George Mason in Atlantic 10 play, while SIUE welcomes Tennessee Tech for an Ohio Valley Conference set.
