City Rivals Set for Afternoon Clash at Hank DeVincent Field
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — City rivals La Salle and Penn will meet on the diamond Tuesday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field, with both teams looking to build on weekend series victories.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 47 degrees.
The La Salle Explorers (11-12) enter having taken two of three from Davidson, including a 10-1 rout Sunday. Reliever Titus Shay was dominant in that win, striking out six over three perfect innings. The right-hander has been sharp recently, allowing no hits and just one earned run over his last 6 2/3 innings across five appearances, fanning 11 batters.
The Penn Quakers (7-10) also secured a series win, taking two of three from Dartmouth. Thomas Shurtleff earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs over six innings. The right-hander’s season has been uneven; he followed a tough start at East Carolina on March 15 with his solid outing against Dartmouth.
La Salle’s offense erupted for 18 runs in its two wins over the weekend. First baseman Alec Welshans provided power Sunday with a home run and three RBIs.
Penn’s Nick Spaventa homered in the same game, part of a Quakers offense that scored 13 runs in the two victories over the Big Green.
The teams have followed similar paths in non-conference play, with both seeking consistency. According to Interstat’s game simulator, Penn is projected to win 6-3.
The game is a final local tune-up before both begin conference schedules. La Salle opens Atlantic 10 play at George Washington on Friday. Penn starts Ivy League action at Yale on Saturday.
