Virginia Erupts Late to Rout Maryland in High-Scoring Affair

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — The Virginia Cavaliers erupted for nine runs in the eighth inning to turn a close game into a 16-6 rout of the Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday night at Virginia Credit Union Stadium.

The Cavaliers, ranked among the nation’s elite at 21-5, trailed 6-4 after the top of the sixth but tied it in the seventh before the decisive outburst. Joe Tiroly’s three-run double highlighted the eighth, part of his four-RBI night. AJ Gracia added three hits and three RBIs.

Maryland (10-12) collected 12 hits, including two from Ryan Costello, but could not contain Virginia’s 19-hit attack. The Terrapins have lost four straight.
