Maryland vs. Virginia

Rain Expected as Slumping Terrapins Visit Cavaliers

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — The surging Virginia Cavaliers host the struggling Maryland Terrapins in a nonconference baseball matchup Tuesday evening at Virginia Credit Union Stadium, with wet weather in the forecast.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under a threat of rain and temperatures near 72 degrees.

Virginia (20-5) enters on a high note, having won 10 of its last 12 games, including a 14-4 rout of Wake Forest on Sunday. The Cavaliers’ powerful offense is averaging over eight runs per game during that stretch.

A key catalyst has been first baseman Sam Harris. The sophomore is riding a hot streak, driving in four runs in Sunday’s win and hitting three home runs with seven RBIs in his last five games. For the season, Harris is batting .310 with a team-leading six homers and 24 RBIs.

Maryland (10-11) seeks to halt a four-game skid after being swept at UCLA over the weekend, culminating in a 14-4 loss Sunday. The Terrapins have lost seven of their last ten.

A bright spot for Maryland has been reliever Logan Hastings. Despite the team’s struggles, the right-hander has been effective in four of his last five outings, including two scoreless innings at UCLA. In his last 10.2 innings pitched, he has allowed earned runs in only one appearance—a four-run outing against Purdue on March 13.

In Sunday’s loss for Maryland, left fielder Jordan Crosland provided a spark with a solo home run. For Virginia in its win, designated hitter Kyle Johnson added a three-run homer.

The all-time series is tightly contested, with Virginia holding a narrow 130-127-1 advantage. This is the first meeting between the programs since 2023.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Virginia is projected to win 7-3.

Following this game, Virginia opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at Boston College this weekend. Maryland returns home to begin a series against Southern California on Friday.
